University Pierre & Marie Curie
France-Paris
Tenure track - Professor in Computational Biology

A Full Professor position in Computational biology is available at the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. The university is one of the largest (30,000 students, 3,250 researchers) in France and features a dynamic and valuable work site in the heart of Paris. The professor will be integrated in the newly created laboratory ’’Genomics of Microorganisms’’, which provides a fully interdisciplinary environment by regrouping experimental biologist and physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists interested in genomics, evolution and environmental adaptation.

Teaching Duties

The professor will teach for Licence (bachelor) and Master (undergraduate) students in Computer Science. The professor is expected to participate actively in the specialization ’’Bioinformatic and Modelization’’ (BIM) of the Master Program in Computer Science and to the International Master Program ’’Bioinformatics, BioMathematic and Modelization’’ (BIMM, shared with the Departments of Computer Science, Mathematics and Biology). This Master Program is done in collaboration with ULB (Free University of Bruxelles).

Informations on the master programs BIM and BIMM can be found at :

Research activity

The Laboratory ’’Genomics of Microorganisms’’ was created by CNRS and UPMC on the 1st of January 2009, and offers a working environment with two multidisciplinary components, experimental and theoretical (computer science, mathematics, physics). The various themes studied by the laboratory are : evolution, genome dynamics, biological networks, structural bioinformatics, environment. More information can be found at :

Starting from September 2009, the lab is composed of 3 experimental teams and 2 theoretical ones.

The professor will be the team leader of the third theoretical team in the lab, and he will be asked to coordinate collaborative programs at the national and international levels. The candidate should show interest to develop collaborations with the experimental teams. Previous involvement of the candidate in multidisciplinary projects with experimental groups will be highly considered.

The research interests of the candidate will match the research axis of the laboratory and complementarity will be highly encouraged. The position is open to computer scientists and mathematicians developing their research in the following domains but not uniquely: population genetics, evolution and phylogenetic reconstruction, development of mathematical methods for genomics (statistics, combinatorics, discrete dynamical systems), development of methods in comparative genomics, metagenomics.

The Lab, FRE 3214 Genomique des microorganismes, is located at the heart of Paris, at the site of Cordeliers. See

To apply to professorships in France, the candidate need to be administratively qualified.
****The applications should be submitted before October 29.****
