PhD student positions: *Bioinformatics of Ageing, Kidney Stem Cells, Genome-Wide Association Studies* Medical Bioinformatics (IBIMA), Faculty of Medicine, University of Rostock, Germany

Several three-year PhD student positions are available in the Medical Bioinformatics group at the University of Rostock in northeastern Germany.

Applicants should hold a diploma/masters degree (or equivalent) in the life sciences or in computer science, physics, chemistry, mathematics or a related area. They should have previous experience in data analysis and programming. A keen interest in science is more important than previous experience in the field, although experience with (high-throughput) biological data such as microarrays, with biological databases and with comparative / evolutionary analysis and machine learning is considered a plus.

One position is earmarked for analysis of ageing-related data, and another is earmarked for genome-wide population data analysis. Finally, one position is expected to be concerned with stem cell data analysis (multipotent progenitors of kidney cells, funded by the German ministry (BMBF)). In this project, methods of machine learning and evolutionary analysis will be applied to molecular data of multipotent kidney cells (genome, transcriptome, interactome) to study the regulatory and interactory circuitry behind multipotency and cellular differentiation. The project is part of a collaborative effort of the medical departments of Greifswald, Rostock and Aachen, applying in-silico analyses in a field with exciting prospects, fighting kidney failure by replenishing dysfunctional cells from progenitors.

Please email applications to Georg Fuellen (bioinfo-jobs@med.uni-rostock.de) (one PDF file, consisting of CV, statement of research interests and qualifications and contact information for 2-4 scientists who may write a letter of recommandation). Review of applications will start November 1 and continue until the position is filled. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be preferred if they possess equal qualifications. Unfortunately, due to strict state regulations, application expenses cannot be reimbursed. Therefore, it is likely that applicants from outside Europe will only be shortlisted if they indicate that they may fly to Germany for a personal interview at their own expense.

In the summer, Rostock and the Baltic Coast is the number one vacation area in Germany, with a very pleasant climate and a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

Kind Regards
Georg Fuellen
