Postdoctoral Position in Algorithm-based Metabolic Network Reconstruction

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Igor Libourel to reconstruct the metabolic networks of Ostreococcus species. Ostreococcus are common marine microalgae and are considered the most primitive members of the green lineage. Their small genome sizes (~12Mbp) give them excellent properties as plant systems biology model organisms. This project is an integral part of our long-range goal to develop mechanistic models that link individual metabolic components to the functional behavior of metabolic networks.

The position entails the genome-scale metabolic networks reconstruction of the two annotated Ostreococcus species O. tauri and O. lucimarinus. The postdoc will use existing software utilities to produce initial networks from the KEGG database. He/She will develop algorithms to iteratively refine these networks by gap analysis and dynamic orthology calls to the BLAST and KEGG databases. Because of the interdisciplinary character of systems biology, our group is dedicated to implement the common systems biology markup language (SBML) and the postdoc is expected to work extensively with the Matlab SBML toolbox. The postdoc should be receptive to advising students, and work closely with internal and external collaborators.

Candidates should have a strong background in computational biology, systems biology, or related discipline. A solid background in mathematics, and some experience in software development are essential.
