Bioinformatics Trainer

We are looking for an enthusiastic bioinformatician with experience in the use of sequence databases and analytical tools such as BLAST, FASTA, EMBOSS and INTERPROSCAN, and also an understanding of phylogenetics, genetic variation, gene expression, structural biology, proteomics, etc., and the use of analytical tools in these fields.

The successful applicant will engage in training as well as testing and deployment of existing and new algorithms for sequence analysis and contribute to the production of up-to-date documentation and training materials for these core bioinformatic tools. S/he will be responsible for training in the efficient use of latest bioinformatics software and databases using various courses at local and international levels. The post holder will also provide bioinformatics user support and contributing to the running of our user support help desk.

The Bioinformatics Trainer will work in a 19 strong team, consisting of software engineers, web developers and administrators and bioinformatic specialists.

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) which is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. The EMBL-EBI maintains the most complete set of biological sequence databases in Europe. These include EMBL-Bank, ENSEMBL, ENSEMBL GENOMES, UniProt Knowledge Base, amongst many others.
 
Applicants must have a degree in bioinformatics or related science and excellent teaching qualifications and experience. A positive attitude to helping users via our help desk is essential. Excellent writing skills are required in order to produce and maintain high-quality training materials and user documentation.

The successful Bioinformatics Trainer will be able to work independently and interact well within a team environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
