Bioinformatician

OPPORTUNITY:

Bioinformatician, genome-wide studies of epigenetic profiling, gene expression, and genetic variation involved in schizophrenia and related disorders

BACKGROUND:

As with other areas of biomedical science, the post-genome era raises the prospect of transformational advances in neuroscience research. Neuroscience faces special challenges, however, in analysis, interpretation, and management of the vast quantities of information generated by genetic and genomic technologies. The phenotypic and organizational complexity of the nervous system calls for distinct analytical and informatics strategies and expertise. Dr. Ophoff’s research at the UCLA Center for Neurobehavioral Genetics focuses on the identification of genetic susceptibility of neurogenetic traits and disorders, with a special focus on schizophrenia. We are now collecting genome-wide data of gene expression, DNA methylation, and genetic variation of patients and healthy controls. While current data sets have been generated using targeted array-based technology it is expected that high-throughput sequencing platforms will be used in the near future. It is our goal that these multiple layers of genomic information are integrated into a systems biology approach that will guide us toward a better understanding of the molecular basis of disease susceptibility.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The bioinformatician will be the primary responsible individual for developing plans and carrying out bioinformatic analyses. He/she works in a team of collaborating faculty experts in statistical genetics, gene expression analysis, bioinformatics, and clinicians. He/she will be involved in developing and evaluating new software tools and data management.

REQUIREMENTS:

Successful applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Computer Science, Biostatistics, Statistics, or related field. Experience with large-scale bioinformatics projects is preferred. Because of the interactive nature of the project (with multiple collaborators) the applicant must have excellent social skills and use these multifaceted insights from the collaborators to develop new and meaningful strategies for data analysis.
