B.S. Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics

University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), United States
Language course is: English
Focus: There are two concentration areas, one in biomolecular engineeri
Target audience education / assumed knowledge: Undergraduate degree - biology, Undergraduate degree - computing/math
Educational certification/accreditation status: UCSC
Professional certification/accreditation status: UCSC
Degree Offered: BS (3-5 years)

Key characteristics of program:
The program has two concentrations: one on biomolecular engineering,
which emphasizes wet-lab work with end-user bioinformatics and
programming; and one on bioinformatics, which emphasizes computational
work. Both concentrations require both biochemistry and programming.

For the bioinformatics concentration, we emphasize building new tools,
more than using existing tools. We use stochastic modeling and machine
learning extensively. The final year of the bioinformatics
concentration is almost the same as the first year of our
graduate program.

We have strengths in comparative genomics, RNA genes, archaeal
genomics, nanopore sequencing, ancient DNA, stem cells, protein
engineering, gene-finding, and several other topics.
Program Goals:
To give students a very broad background to prepare them for graduate
education in bioinformatics or biomolecular engineering. Students are
also well prepared for jobs in the biotech industry.
