Key characteristics of program: The program integrates coursework in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science, along with two upper-level bioinformatics courses, all in a traditional liberal arts setting at a small college. The major has a capstone research project as a requirement for graduation. In addition, there are opportunities for summer research both at Saint Vincent College and at (or in collaboration with) nearby institutions such as the Windber Research Institute, the University of Pittsburgh, or Carnegie Mellon University.

Program Goals: The program is desgined to give students a deep grounding in both biology and computer science, enabling them to pursue a variety of avenues upon graduation, including attending graduate school or medical school, or going into the workforce. In addition to bioinformatics knowledge and skills, graduates of the program will also have the writing, communication, and analytical thinking skills developed during the course of a strong liberal arts education. |
