President Obama Releases FY 2010 Budget

On May 7th, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released President Obama’s long-awaited fiscal year 2010 Budget that includes detailed spending requests for specific federal agencies and programs.  The budget request includes more than 1,500 pages of text explaining the President’s requested spending levels for the approximately 40 percent of the budget that is included in the 12 annual appropriations bills approved by Congress.

FASEB Raises Concerns About President’s FY 2010 Budget for Biomedical Research

"We would like to have seen the strong support for medical research expressed by President Obama matched by sizable funding increases for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in his FY 2010 budget, although we remain optimistic about the future," stated Richard Marchase, Ph.D., President of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). "While we appreciate that NIH received an incremental increase at a time when federal programs are facing cuts, and while the scientific community is immensely grateful for the investment in medical research that Congress and the President made through the Recovery Act, the budget still raises serious concerns about the sustainability of the biomedical research enterprise.

FY 2010 Budget:  National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The President’s budget requests an FY 2010 program level of $30.996 billion for NIH.  This is an increase of $443 million (1.45%) over the FY 2009 comparable level, excluding ARRA funding.  A summary of the President’s budget for NIH is now available on the NIH website.  The budget includes specific funding requests for cancer research (a total of $6 billion across all institutes/centers) and autism research (a total of $141 million).
