ISCB Wikipedia and Wikidata editathon at ISMB2016

Date/Time: 11th July 2016, 7pm-9pm.
Room: America’s Seminar

Editathon Wiki

ISCB is committed to furthering knowledge of computational biology to all. Wikipedia has been an important avenue for both scientists and the public alike to find out about our science. 2016 is the Wikipedia Year of Science and to celebrate that we are organizing a free event to learn more about Wikipedia, Wikidata and how you can use Wikipedia in your teaching.

The editathon will be an informal evening event. There will be a short presentation at the start of the event with the basics for editing Wikipedia. This will be followed by an open editing session where participants will be free to ask everything they wanted to know about Wikimedia projects but were always afraid to ask. Later in the evening we will have a presentation from the Wiki Education Foundation on how to use Wikipedia to enrich students learning experiences. We will also discuss how computational biology classes can get involved in entering the ISCB Wikipedia competition.

We will have experts on hand to answer your questions and help you understand Wikipedia and Wikidata and learn how and when to update their content. The goals of the editathon are:

  • Learn how to edit Wikipedia
  • Learn how to edit Wikidata
  • Learn how Wikipedia can be used in the classroom – Wikipedia can be used in many ways in education.

We welcome participants of any level, if you are an expert come along and help out those with less experience.

We are grateful to the Simons foundation for sponsoring this event.
