Description A: This session gives an overview of FAIR and why we need to be aware of it in bioinformatics education specifically: how can bioinformatics training programs embody FAIR principles?

A wealth of mitochondrial biology knowledge, integral to understanding the pathophysiology of many human diseases, is available to experienced biomedical scientists, but its access and comprehension remain widely unavailable and fragmented. The GeneWiki project, an effort within Wikipedia, was established to bridge this gap. However, many mitochondrial proteins remain inadequately represented and poorly annotated. The Cardiac Gene Wiki team has undertaken concerted efforts to identify and address deficiencies in the representation of human cardiac mitochondrial genes on Wikipedia by developing and employing software tools for curating scientific knowledge. We have successfully utilized this platform to engage citizen scientists and to conduct training efforts for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students of all levels.

Description C: This session will discuss Michel Dumontier's recent paper “FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship”. Michel will dive into FAIR principles as applied to teaching and training on FAIR principles.

Description D: This panel session will be a forum for discussion and exchange of strategies and approaches for ideas for how we can further enhance the understanding and appreciate a data lifecycle among life science trainees and students and equip them to enable this.

Description E: A wrap up and future directions discussion on FAIR in bioinformatics education and training.
