WEB2022: Reduce your impact - become more green!

Description and expected outcomes

The session will start with a keynote from Loic Lannelogue describing the environmental impacts of bioinformatics and computing work, how these impacts can be assessed and where changes in practice can reduce carbon footprints. Additional factors affecting environmental impact will be raised during a panel discussion featuring Loic, Michael Inouye and Alex Bateman.

To focus the discussion further on training, attendees will then be invited to join group discussions where they will have an opportunity to review their training / educational programmes. The aim will be to share their knowledge of where they have the greatest environmental impact, explore ideas on how these can be overcome and discuss how green compute practices can be incorporated into their training, enabling trainees to employ them successfully. Discussions will be facilitated both in-person at the conference venue and via virtual means.

Our aim is for all participants to discuss:

• Where environmental impact arises
• Which elements of training can be modified to reduce impact
• Which actions can be taken to reduce the impact at the organisation level
• What advice can we give individuals to reduce their personal impact (with special focus on green compute practices)

We hope to produce a report on the results of the discussion, sharing advice, ideas and guidance raised during the WEB.

Audience

This session is open to anyone with an interest in green computing practices for bioinformatics, especially those who deliver courses / programmes of computational training or are trainees attending such programmes.
