There are a growing number of common challenges across both academia and industry in terms of bioinformatics and data science skill development. Both sectors are challenged by how to best develop the new generation of young scientists and to upskill the more experienced workforce. Although mobility between the two sectors becomes easier and more “acceptable”, there are still barriers in bioinformatics skill development (e.g. who develops training, where training happens, competencies required).
The aim of WEB 2025 will be to explore the challenges in cross-sector collaboration for bioinformatics learning and teaching. WEB 2025 will also identify opportunities for both sectors to push forward together and provide additional support to the next generation Industrial workforce.
The first session will be a panel discussion of training experts who have worked across the sectors. Experiences from the wider audience will be gathered and examples of positive use cases for cross-sector learning will be collected.
The second session will be a hands-on workshop to identify concrete actions which enable a coherent and sustainable exchange of experience, knowledge and best practice in bioinformatics training across the sectors. The final aim is to develop ISCB strategic activity to support these activities and ensure that young scientists have the skills to engage more widely with industry and more easily navigate between academic and industrial roles.
