Purpose: In the post-genomic Era, both graduate and undergraduate
Bioinformatics education programs/deptartments are increasingly being
developed national-wide. Creating a standardized Bioinformatics curriculum
has been difficult due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field,
emphasis, and course requirements in biology, computer science, and
statistics.
The mission of the Rocky 04 Bioinformatics Education Panel Discussion is to:
- exchange ideas on best practices for Bioinformatics Education and course
curriculum
- educate each other on existing and developing Bioinformatic Education
programs/departments at the BS, MS and PhD level in the regional west
- develop strategies to leverage faculty and student talent among
institutions in the regional west in the form of course teleconferencing,
internships, fellowships, increase minority participation, and other
- discuss course curriculum at regional institutions that best enable
students to further their Bioinformatics education at the BS, MS, PhD., and
certificate levels
