Biochemists and molecular biologists, whose training and practice are rooted in mechanistic and evolutionary understanding of macromolecules, have been observing much of the recent developments in large-scale biology with a detached amusement. "Chemical biology" and "synthetic biology" would seem not more than just biochemistry indiscriminately applied to all kinds of genes and their products; and "systems biology", while drawing arrows between genes and calling this "a network" is not always leading to the important conclusions about the functioning of living systems. Moreover, there has been a troubling sense of exclusivity about some of the new, large-scale or "data-driven" approaches, which sometimes have been contrasted to the "old-fashioned" studies of smaller-scale systems. The time is right to demonstrate that the old and new biochemistry are in fact parts of one and the same research endeavor. The ASBMB Special Symposium Chemical, Synthetic and Systems Biology: New Directions of Biochemistry in the 21st Century will build on the success and lessons learned from the 2009 symposium Systems Biology for Biochemists. Each day of the symposium will be centered at a particular "biology" (i.e., chemical, synthetic, and systems). Both dry-lab and wet-lab experimentation will be covered in detail each day, with a mix of plenary talks presented by invited speakers in the morning followed by short talks programmed from volunteer abstracts. Students and young investigators are encouraged to submit their work for both short talk and poster consideration. Organized by Arcady Mushegian, Stowers Institute for Medical Research & Aled Edwards, University of Toronto |
