| "This FASEB SRC will present new discoveries in Ca2+ signaling at the basic and translational levels. Calcium is the most ubiquitous second messenger in biology and plays critical roles in a wide range of dynamic process from synaptic transmission to sensory perception, development, gene expression, cell migration, the immune response, and heart function. Defects in Ca2+ signaling lead to a correspondingly large number of serious diseases, including nervous disorders (stroke, mental illness, neurodegenerative diseases), immunodeficiencies, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, and developmental defects. The objective of this FASEB Conference is to bring together leading investigators from a diversity of fields to discuss common mechanisms, approaches, and insights into Ca2+ signaling, share exciting new developments, establish new personal contacts, and promote future collaborations. An important goal of the conference is to nurture the next generation of investigators in Ca2+ signaling by providing young scientists with the opportunity to present their work and to engage in rigorous scientific discussions with peers in a relaxed, casual environment in beautiful Lake Tahoe. Several “Meet-the-Experts” sessions will be included to provide career counseling to young scientists. The scientific areas covered will include: Imaging calcium signals in living tissues, Calcium in mitochondria & organelles, Store-operated calcium entry, Calcium channel structure & function, Cell physiology of calcium signals, and Calcium in disease." |
