Description

The DIMACS Bio-Math Connect Institute 2006: A Unique Professional Development Experience Linking the Biological and Mathematical
Sciences for High School Biology and Mathematics Teachers

* The DIMACS Biomath Connect Institute (BMCI) explores exciting topics at the interface of the biological and mathematical sciences, topics that can be brought into your high school math/computer science and/or biology classrooms.

* BMCI will emphasize BIOINFORMATICS and COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY with additional topics involving mathematical modeling and EPIDEMIOLOGY and ECOLOGY.

* MATERIALS will be provided, and others developed by you, for you to TAKE BACK TO YOUR CLASSROOMS.

* Collaborative FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES enhance the experience.

* Participants receive an introduction to the dramatic changes in modern biology that, through partnerships with mathematics, have led to major scientific developments such as the human genome project and defense against emerging diseases like SARS.

* You have the option of ENGAGING IN A REAL RESEARCH EXPERIENCE in computational biology.

* FUNDING EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE: We expect that hotel rooms, meals, and a modest stipend will be provided.

* GRADUATE CREDIT: You may receive graduate credits from Rutgers University if you wish.

* LOCATION: BMCI is a national program sponsored by the Colorado Institute of Technology (CIT) and Rutgers University (RU). The program will be held at CIT in Broomfield, Colorado, just outside of Denver,
from July 16 to 28, 2006. A follow-up summer program will take place in July 2007 at RU in Piscataway, NJ.

* APPLICATIONS are preferred from a pair of teachers from opposite disciplines from the same school, but applications will be accepted from pairs of teachers in different schools and from individuals who prefer to be paired with others whom they do not know.

* APPLICATION DEADLINE is March 1, 2006 or until all slots are filled. Early application deadline is January 16, 2006. Priority will be given to early applicants.
