Key characteristics of program:

The Graduate School in Genome Science and Technology (GST) at The University of Tennessee and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is a unique, multidisciplinary program for full time graduate study leading to the Ph.D. (M.S.) degree in Life Science with an emphasis in genomics and quantitative biology.

The program takes advantage of the unique opportunities between UT and ORNL for interaction and collaboration, which combine an academic environment (UT) with a team-oriented approach to large research initiatives (ORNL).

Students are trained in emerging areas of genome science, with emphasis on
* genetics/genomics
* structural biology/biophysics
* computational biology/bioinformatics
* bioanalytical technologies/proteomics

Scientists from both campuses participate in teaching. The GST program faculty include ORNL investigators and faculty at UT's basic and applied life/computer science departments. A year-long introductory course focuses on scientific inquiry at a genome-wide scale as well as bio-analytical technologies. Laboratory rotations during the first year offer students hands-on experience in a variety of the program's focus areas.

Program Goals:

Students are trained at and across the interface of experimental and computational biology and, upon completing the program, are competitive for jobs in academic research and teaching, government laboratories, and private industries such as pharmaceuticals and other technologies. To this end, the program provides a firm foundation in genetics, molecular and cellular biology, and biochemistry. Students in the program develop skills from basic coding and bioinformatics all the way to the most advanced supercomputing architectures.
