ISMB 2000 CONFERENCE IN SAN DIEGO, AUGUST 19-23,2000 ISMB 2000
This will be the biggest ISMB conference ever! It will be held in beautiful San Diego, California from August 19-23, 2000. Early registration closes June 30. After that registration is subject to available space. Emphasis will be on new developments in gene regulation, pathway analysis, as well as sequence and structure analysis. Following is the schedule:
Please refer to the Web site http://ismb2000.sdsc.edu for full details.
Philip Bourne & Michael Gribskov
Chairs, ISMB 2000

DR. OVERTON, UPENN'S BIOINFORMATICS PIONEER
We are deeply saddened to pass on the news of the death of Dr. G. Christian Overton, Director of the Center for Bioinformatics at the University of Pennsylvania, and member of the ISCB board of directors, from complications arising from cardiomyopathy. The computational biology community has lost a major star and wonderful person. Dr. Overton's charm, wit, good nature and academic brilliance will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to his wife Carolyn, their children and the entire family. David Searls, Susan Davidson and David States are leading a drive to create an award in Chris' honor. The hope is to establish a prize recognizing an outstanding contribution to computational biology that will be awarded at the Society's ISMB meeting each year. Companies or individuals interested in contributing to this endowment should contact admin@iscb.org ABOUT CHRIS'S WORK:

BIOINFORMATICS OPEN SOURCE CONFERENCE 2000, (BOSC2000) IN SAN DIEGO, AUGUST 17-18, 2000
Focused on discussing open source software in the field of bioinformatics, BOSC2000 will be held two days before the ISMB2000, on August 17-18, 2000. The two day conference will feature speakers on software engineering techniques in the life sciences. The conference is organized "by EMBL-EBI of the University of California, Berkeley and others." Attendees are encouraged to submit abstracts for consideration to: bosc@bubbles.sonsorol.org. Some abstracts will be selected for presentation and while others will be selected for poster presentation. Tools that are open source or built on top of open source software will be given priority. The conference draws on the success of "Bioperl-99" which was a satellite conference to ISMB-99. For more information: bosc@bubbles.sonsorol.org . URL: http://ismb2000.sdsc.edu/bosc2000

BIOINFORMATICS JOURNAL NOW ONLINE

An online version of the journal Bioinformatics is now available, according to Oxford University Press. With improved functionality, a new 'look and feel' and a new URL, the journal is hosted by HighWire Press [http://highwire.stanford.edu ], a department of Stanford University Libraries. HighWire is host to some of the world's leading scientific and medical journals, including Journal of Biological Chemistry, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and The EMBO Journal. The new URL for 'Bioinformatics' is: http://bioinformatics.oupjournals.org While in the short term the old URL (www.oup.co.uk/bioinformatics ) will simply redirect you to the new location, it is advisable to bookmark the new URL. As a member of the ISCB, you automatically have free access to Bioinformatics Online. It is our hope that you will find the new enhancements to the journal useful. If you have any problem accessing the online journal, or any comments on Bioinformatics in general, you are urged to contact Oxford University Press (prosserd@oup.co.uk ).

USE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR MASS MAILING If you want to contact all of our members, use our society newsletter. Simply send to the ISCB office, (admin@iscb.org ), a one or two paragraph blurb and we will include it in our society newsletter, which goes to all members monthly. We also ask that you consider a discount for ISCB members in exchange for this mailing. For example, Stanford's Bioinformatics Certificate program offered a 10% discount in a recent newsletter.

CALL FOR PAPERS: 16TH ACM SYMPOSIUM ON APPLIED COMPUTING (SAC2001)
CALL FOR PAPERS:
Research Paper Track on Bioinformatics
16th ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC2001)
March 11-14, 2001
Las Vegas, Nevada USA
The explosion of data generated by recent developments in molecular biology and genomics has produced computational challenges which represent collaborative research opportunities for computer scientists. The primary aim of this track is to attract papers that address these challenges relative to a variety of problems and techniques and hence to showcase the spectrum of current computational application within biology; as such, paper topics of interest include the whole of bioinformatics and computational biology. Papers authored or co-authored by students are of particular interest. As this is the first-ever research track in bioinformatics at SAC, a special feature of this track will be a series of associated events at SAC2001 sponsored by ACM SIGBIO (Special Interest Group on Biomedical Computing), e.g., a plenary lecture, a half-day tutorial, a panel discussion on developing university bioinformatics curricula. The deadline for submission of extended abstracts is September 1, 2000, and authors will be notified by October 13, 2000. For more information, see http://www.cs.mun.ca/~harold/CFP/SAC01 (bioinformatics track home page) or http://www.acm.org/conferences/sac/sac2001 (conference home page) or contact the track chair, Warren Jones (jones@cis.uab.edu).
