| The second International Society for Computational Biology Latin American regional meeting (ISCB-LA) will take place in March 2012 in Santiago, Chile. This meeting constitutes the second regional Latin America meeting officially sponsored by ISCB, after ISCB-LA-2010 hold in Montevideo, Uruguay, in March 2010. Each year the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), through its series of conferences and meetings, brings together scientists and students from all over the world. ISCB understands the pivotal role that conferences play in the development of innovative ideas and scientific discovery. Conferences are key to the development and exchange of new ideas in science. Over the years many thousands of participants have attended ISCB’s annual ISMB and ISMB/ECCB conferences. As most of those attendees do their research in North America and Europe, the ISCB Regional Conferences aim to break the barrier imposed by high cost travel. How? By bringing a high quality conference, including lectures delivered by world-renowned scientists, to the regions of Latin America, Africa and Asia. ISCB also aims to provide more students the opportunity to discuss and participate in the latest developments in bioinformatics and computational biology by bringing these meetings closer to home. We hope the ISCB-LA will be the first of many conferences that will contribute to the growth of the field within the region and support scientific innovation in Latin American countries.
