| Bioinformatics is a young discipline that integrates mathematical and computational techniques with biological knowledge to analyze genetic information. Bioinformatics techniques are playing an increasingly important role in the biosciences. Using these techniques, analysis of the vast amounts of data produced by DNA sequencing and mapping projects such as the Human Genome Project is uncovering hitherto unknown relationships between genes and diseases, having a profound impact on drug development and clinical trials, and is affecting medical diagnostics, pharmacogenomics and agricultural and industrial biotechnology. Despite its increasing importance, however, there is a general lack of integration of bioinformatics concepts into the undergraduate curriculum in the life sciences and related disciplines where they could be readily applied. Further, although molecular biology is a rich problem domain for computer scientists, most computer science students are not introduced to its potential. The intent of this workshop is to bring together educators and researchers from the life and computer sciences to discuss strategies of integrating bioinformatics into the life sciences as well as presenting bioinformatics as an interesting problem domain for computer scientists. Also of interest are innovative ways of introducing bioinformatics as a scientific discipline and possible career path to pre-college students and teachers. Submissions pertaining to all levels of instruction, from course modules to entire curricula, will be welcomed. Your submitted paper must be camera-ready and formatted according to the rules of Procedia Computer Science (http://www.iccs-meeting.org/iccs2012/cfp.html). PostScript and source versions of your paper must be submitted electronically through the conference’s paper submission system. (http://www.iccs-meeting.org/iccs2012/papers). Papers must not exceed ten pages in length when typeset using the Procedia format. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper. |
