The Nutrition Society Training & Education Programme is collaborating with the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) to provide a workshop focused on ‘Bioinformatics for nutritionists’ in London on 14-15 January 2013. The Training & Education Programme provides practical training in the application of nutritional science intended for the national and international nutrition, dietetics and health care professional workforce. EBI is a lead organisation in specialist research and services providing an invaluable resource of biological data and utilities to aid the scientific community in the understanding of genomic and proteomic data. The workshop is designed to enable delegates to make use of freely available open-source, specific bioinformatics databases containing data on ontology of chemical entities. The first day includes an introduction to the database held by the European Bioinformatics Institute, which hosts resources in metabolism (small molecules, drugs, drug-like molecules and enzymes) and metabolomics. On the second day, expert trainers will lead in-depth sessions on the use of publicly available resources on four primary enzyme portals (ISA, Pride, Uniprot and Reactome). Tutorials will be followed by practical exercises to explore functionality, extract data and search for experiments on tissues, cells or nutrients of interest.
