United States - NY - Cold Spring Harbor

Hosted by: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
Venue: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
Dates: Nov 11, 2004 through Nov 13, 2004

Description

Vast amounts of mammalian sequence data have been produced by the Human Genome Project and subsequent efforts, with considerably larger data sets coming in the near future. However, the ability to interpret that sequence lags far behind the ability to generate it. For example, it has been estimated that roughly 5% of each mammalian genome performs a biological function important for evolutionary fitness. Yet, the predicted ~1.5% that codes for proteins is incompletely identified at present, and far less is known about the remaining ~3.5%. An unknown amount of the latter contains signals that control gene expression levels. Beyond those coding and regulatory sequences are little-known or completely unexplored sequences conferring other functions (e.g., those related to chromatin activity or epigenetic phenomena). Identifying all such functional elements in mammalian genomes represents one of the most important priorities for the field of genomics.

The workshop will bring together bench scientists and computational biologists to assess the current state of our understanding, to discuss strategies for completing an encyclopedia of functional elements in the mammalian genome (e.g. the ENCODE Project -- see http://www.genome.gov/10005107), and to establish plans for exploring the less-understood territory. The meeting will include five oral sessions and one poster session.
