| In 1980, FASEB began planning a new program for scientific communication to be at the cutting edge of research in a format entirely different from the annual meeting. The initiation of the FASEB Summer Research Conferences in 1982 spawned a continuing series of inter-disciplinary exchanges that have become recognized as a valuable complement to the highly successful Society meetings. The conferences are divided into small groups of experimental biologists who meet intimately and without distractions to explore new approaches to those research areas undergoing rapid scientific change. To ensure excellence, the topics have been selected by a scientific advisory committee. Every effort has been made to avoid duplication of other conferences. Emphasis will be on cutting edge research, with prominent scientists in each field making presentations to attendees who themselves are heavily engaged in research or are in ancillary fields where an accurate understanding of allied scientific advances is important. Post-doctoral candidates are also encouraged to participate in the conferences. Attendees will be selected by the chairpersons on the basis of their probable contributions to science. Communication among leaders in each field will open avenues of further research to find solutions to crucial problems that must be addressed. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor medical education for physicians. Up to 30 hours of Category I Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits will be offered based on attendance at these conferences.
