Description

Contemporary information systems and storage facilities have evolved a complexity that limits simple access to knowledge. This is also true of such systems managing biological data. Recognized as major challenges of the post genomic era, data integration and knowledge retrieval are being met by knowledge based systems which rely on ontologies, multi-agent systems, probabilistic modeling and natural language processing. These technologies are at the forefront; being tailored to build knowledge based semantic systems of direct use to the scientific discovery process.

- Automated access to specific units of information found exclusively within documents or raw text annotations is the key deliverable of text mining and natural language processing.

- Formal ontologies provide consensus representations of knowledge that facilitate advanced Description Logic based query and access to federated warehouses of bioinformatics data.

- Multi agent systems provide a modular middleware for task specific transactions across the internet and accessing web services.

- Advanced data mining technologies can generate probabilistic knowledge that can be validated by literature searches and with further experimental laboratory analysis.

- Merging the needs of scientists with the conceptual focus of Semantic Web initiatives opens the door to custom designed platforms of knowledge technologies that deliver knowledge to the user in recognizable semantics without requiring an understanding of the IT infrastructure.

The target audience of the KBB is investigators and students of bioinformatics, ontology, computational linguistics, data mining and bio scientists developing and using intelligent systems to enhance their research. The KBB workshop has invited prominent speakers in their respective fields to showcase the reach of these technologies and highlight challenges in delivering semantic web systems to the scientist.
