Description

The International Conference of Bioinformatics (InCoB) is one of largest bioinformatics conferences in the Asia-Pacific. Now in its seventh year, InCoB has enjoyed national support since its first meeting held in Bangkok on 2002 when the event was coordinated by BIOTEC and NECTEC of the Thai science and technology agency, NSTDA. Subsequently, this conference was held in Penang (Malaysia), Auckland (New Zealand), Busan (Korea), Delhi (India) and Hong Kong.

True to its origins, although this meeting emphasizes more on the biological aspects and applications of bioinformatics than the informational and computing aspects, all are welcome. Today, bioinformatics practitioners from both biology or computing backgrounds attend this annual meeting. Moreover, InCoB is now hosted on a regular basis as an official annual conference for the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet), a network of people associated with the advancement of bioinformatics in the Asia Pacific region for the past 10 years since its inception in 1998. The annual general meeting (AGM) of APBioNet is held within the InCoB conference annually. Key strategic initiatives to promote the bioinformatics revolution in our life science research and educational community are discussed at the AGM.

To attract and support local bioinformaticians, InCoB 2008 will be held together with the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology in Taiwan (BIT 2008) conference from Oct. 20 to 22, 2008. To involve bioscientists in this meeting, InCoB 2008 will be held back-to-back with the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB) symposium (Oct. 24 to 25, 2008). The workshops and tutorials will be held on Oct. 23, so the audience from both conferences may interact with one another. Also, on Oct. 23, APBioNet is organizing an IUBMB-funded Workshop on Education in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, to revive and continue the pioneering efforts of the Workshops on Education in Bioinformatics (WEB, the ISMB Specicial Interest Group Meetings).

In keeping with the increasing quality of the conference, InCoB this year will continue to publish the best papers presented in the conference track in BMC Bioinformatics (Impact Factor 3.62) and also in Bioinformation, just as we have in the past two years.

In order to showcase the research arising from this region, a new Highlights track is now available. The Technology track will afford an opportunity to present software, databases and web services.
