Bioinformatics graduate Certificate Program

University/Institute: Oklahoma State University (OKState)
Location: United States - Stillwater
Focus: Bioinformatics
Recommended Undergraduate Degrees: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Math/Statistics
Degree Offered: Diploma/Certificate (2 years)Diploma/Certificate (Major/Primary Degree)

Key characteristics of program:

The mission of the OSU official campus-wide Bioinformatics Certification Program is to train post-baccalaureate students in the techniques required to generate, analyze, and interpret complex biologically-derived data sets. All students are required to complete the foundation course and at least one course from each of the three core areas. Elective courses will be approved on the student’s plan of study, which, when applicable, will be coordinated with the student’s graduate advisory committee within their home departments to determine if the elective courses apply to a concurrent graduate degree program. A capstone project will be designed and implemented by the student concurrent with or upon completion of the prescribed courses.

Program Goals:

1. Students will understand the terminologies, technologies, and concepts used in the analysis of data related to genomes and genome structures.

2. Students will acquire sufficient cross-disciplinary knowledge to independently design bioinformatics projects and organize collaborators of appropriate expertise across the core disciplines of life sciences, computer sciences, and statistics.

3. Students will develop a set of skills including text mining/formatting, basic statistics, basic programming script, and use of genomic information and databases appropriate to their long-term employment.
