Bioinformatics & Computational Biology Master's Program

University/Institute: Saint Louis University (SLU)
Location: United States - St. Louis
Focus: Bioinformatics
Recommended Undergraduate Degrees: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Math/Statistics
Degree Offered: MS/MSc/MA/M.Eng (< 1 year)MS/MSc/MA/M.Eng (Major/Primary Degree)

Key characteristics of program:

We are an interdisciplinary Masters program in the College of Arts & Sciences sponsored by the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics & Statistics.

The program aims to prepare students for work in these fields through course work in biological and computational sciences combined with research and industry experiences. These interdisciplinary skills will ready students for a career in biotechnology and related fields.

The program is 30 hours and can be completed in 18 months. All classes are conducted in person with the instructor. At this time we offer no online courses.

Assistantships are available and we have a 5-year NSF training grant to supplement our assistantships for students with unmet need. Internships are available at local companies in St. Louis' thriving biotech industry as well as in local academic laboratories.

Program Goals:

We anticipate that our graduates will be able to:
1) Design and implement in silico experiments
for biological problems;
2) Apply and combine existing tools for the processing and analysis of biological data sets
3) Use small- and large-scale quantitative data sets to model complex biological systems
4) Work as part of multidisciplinary teams in both corporate and academic environments
5) Effectively communicate research approaches and findings
