Key characteristics of program:

Life sciences and its allied technologies would be the cornerstone of the economy ahead. The economy which had evolved through hunting-gathering, agricultural, industrial and finally information technology phases; would see Bio-economy assume gargantuan proportions, of the order of $300 billion per year, as compared to all of these. With their innate complexities and variety, life systems provide overwhelming number of opportunities for global economic growth. Health care and Biotechnology industries amongst others have begun this march in all earnestness. Indiaâ??s march towards becoming the global leader in IT sector is widely recognized. The increasing number of MNCs setting up India as their base for their global operations underscores this point. India can successfully leverage these traditional strengths in software sector in providing cutting edge solutions to Health care, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, Marine, Agri-business, Animal husbandry and Vaccine design industries. This amalgamation of IT and Biology, popularly known as Bioinformatics has become an outstanding tool for culling out vital leads and cost effective solutions from the various biological information and sources. Government of India has been actively involved in promoting entrepreneurship in Bioinformatics. Ministry of HRD has been instrumental in setting up an apex centre of excellence for Bioinformatics at the Indian Institute of Information technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) in 2001. The entry to the program is restricted to M.B.B.S, B.Tech in computer science, M.Sc in Biotechnology, Microbiology and B.Pharm candidates. All the candidates have to be GATE qualified except those graduated in medicine. The first national entrance conducted at IIIT-A had witnessed keen interest among students. The state of the art course pedagogy of the M.Tech program is thoroughly industry oriented and by far the best in India.

Program Goals:

To produce Techno masters through due understanding of multi-disciplines including computational, biological, medical and chemistry domains.
