BE (Bioinformatics Engineering)

University/Institute: University of New South Wales (UNSW)
Location: Australia - Sydney
Focus: Bioinformatics
Recommended Undergraduate Degrees: None
Degree Offered: BS/BSc/BA/B.Eng (< 1 year)BS/BSc/BA/B.Eng (Major/Primary Degree)

Key characteristics of program:

This Bachelor of Engineering (Bioinformatics Engineering) program's composition is roughly 25% biological sciences, 40% computer science/engineering, 15% maths/statistics and 20% dedicated bioinformatics. All students are expected to work on a research project and write a thesis in final year. One key feature is the program's engineering focus: it includes project management, professional issues and industry placements, and is accredited by Engineers Australia.

The program is also available combined with other programs:
BE (bioinformatics engineering) BA (5 years)
BE (bioinformatics engineering) BSc (5 years)
BE (bioinformatics engineering) Master of Biomedical Engineering (5 years)
BE (bioinformatics engineering) Bachelor of Commerce
BE (bioinformatics engineering) Bachelor of Laws
BE (bioinformatics engineering) Bachelor of Science (advanced science)
BE (bioinformatics engineering) Bachelor of Science (advanced maths)

Program Goals:

Graduates from this program should have an in-depth understanding of current methods for data analysis and data mining used in bioinformatics and computational biology and should be able to use and implement these methods and develop new ones. In addition they should have the competency in biology expected of a biology BSc graduate and the computer science/software engineering competency of a qualified software engineer. Graduates from this program should be able to find employement or further education as computational biologists, life scientists, computer programmers, and data analysts both in biology and other fields with similar data analysis needs.
