Key characteristics of program:

We emphasize building new tools, more than using existing tools. We use stochastic modeling and machine learning extensively.

We have strengths in gene-finding, assembly, comparative genomics, RNA genes, archaeal genomics, and ancient DNA.

We require both biochemistry and computer science as part of the program.

The final year of the B.S. program is essentially the same as the first year of the graduate program.

We also have a minor in bioinformatics intended for biology majors.

Program Goals:

To give students a very broad background to prepare them for graduate education in bioinformatics. (To a lesser extent to prepare them for jobs in industry.)
