Location: Germany - Saarbrücken
Focus: Bioinformatics
Recommended Undergraduate Degrees: Other: Bachelor of Science (Bioinformatics/ Computational Molecular Bio
Degree Offered: MS/MSc/MA/M.Eng (2 years)MS/MSc/MA/M.Eng (Major/Primary Degree)

Key characteristics of program:

Graduation requires at least 120 ECTS credit points (at least 69 graded credits). Advanced computer science courses offered are Data structures and Algorithms, Computer Graphics, Data Base Systems, Information Retrieval, Artificial Intelligence, Optimization, and Software Technique. Advanced life scence courses are The Human Genome, Biophysics and Structural Biology, Metabolic Engineering, and Protein Techniques. Advanced bioinformatics courses are to be selected among Bioinformatics III and special lectures on topics in current bioinformatics research such as Statistical Learning, Drug Design, Structural Bioinformatics, Protein Folding etc. Students are actively involved in the research of the department and the research institutes on campus (Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence) during the required Master thesis. Thus, students can apply their knowledge and understanding in new research environments and multidisciplinary contexts.

Program Goals:

"The M.Sc. program in bioinformatics provides comprehensive education towards
multidisciplinary career objectives in industry or academia. The study program
emphasizes methodological and algorithmic aspects of bioinformatics and computer
science while providing advanced theoretical training in selected topics from the life
sciences. The students have demonstrated knowledge and understanding in advanced
courses in computer science and life sciences. In addition they have to demonstrate
that they are able to work in a team and to communicate scientific projects and results
to various audiences. The Master program provides intensive and advanced algorithmic
training towards developing novel bioinformatics approaches. "
