Health Informatics and Bioinformatics

University/Institute: Grand Valley State University (GVSU)
Location: United States - Grand Rapids
Focus: Bioinformatics
Recommended Undergraduate Degrees: Biology, Computer Science, Other: Qualification determined in interview, see website
Degree Offered: MS/MSc/MA/M.Eng (2 years)MS/MSc/MA/M.Eng (Major/Primary Degree)

Key characteristics of program:

Health Informatics and Bioinformatics:
The utilization of computer technology to manage and analyze information in the life and health sciences.

The curricula for Bioinformatics and Health Informatics presume a common methodological basis for both disciplines:

* knowledge discovery and data mining
* large database design
* information visualization

These core courses allow for synergy between disciplines and students that are drawn from:
Biology, Medicine, Nursing, Computer Science, Statistics, and Mathematics and related fields.

Students take a directed sequence emphasizing:
Bioinformatics
- or -
Health informatics

Overall requirements for the MS in Health Informatics and Bioinformatics consist of 36 credits, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Additionally, we offer a nine credit graduate certificate.

Program Goals:

The Medical and Bioinformatics Professional Science Master's (PSM) degree program has a course design common to all three GVSU PSM programs:

specific courses for critical content in Medical and Bioinformatics
laboratory experiences essential for the development of requisite skill and knowledge sets
a common seminar series
a capstone course and internships to provide essential hands-on learning in the field

Characteristic of the program: interdisciplinary, non-thesis, involve both the university and its industry partners, emphasize teamwork, problem-solving, communication, scientific knowledge and technical skills, and are designed to integrate university coursework with hospital, business, and industrial internships to better prepare students for the variety of career paths associated with the life science and health science industry.
