Key characteristics of program:

UNIVERSITY OF KERALA:The Masters programme offered is designed to train a technical graduate thoroughly in one aspect of the discipline which the department terms as Computational Biology. The programme admits only Computing, IT or similar technical Bachelors degree holders. In particular, it does not admit Life Science students. Our programme is unique in this aspect as similar courses typically admit students from all allied areas. The programme was started under ‘UGC Innovative Programme Scheme’ in 2007. The curriculum is periodically revised after seeking inputs from stake holders (employees, alumni, teachers and external experts). The current syllabus has been designed in 2019. The course has been structured on the basis of Outcome Based Education (OBE), a method of curriculum design that focuses on what students can actually do after course completion.
The current programme ensures expertise in Python and Machine learning to enhance the employment opportunities of students in general informatics sector as well. The Programme Specific Outcomes (PSO) of the MSc Programme are:
• Life Science concepts and skills relevant to CB & B
• Mathematical concepts and skills relevant to CB& B
• Skill in designing and developing on-line databases
• Basic skill in designing and developing dynamic websites
• Basic wet lab skill and exposure to molecular biology experiments
• Advanced skill in an industry-required programming language
• Thorough knowledge of basic concepts underpinning CB& B
• Moderate skill in using basic computation tools of CB& B
• Knowledge in the field of Machine/ Deep Learning
• Skill in developing Deep Learning models for general/ CB&B problems
• Knowledge about the scientific methods and skills in research process
• Knowledge and skill to process DNA/RNA/AA sequence data
• Knowledge and skill in computational drug design
• Skill in designing & implementing medium-scale projects in CB& B
• Enhanced skills & attitudes to become a better learner, thinker, professional and a human being

Program Goals:

MPhil Programmes
The Department of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics (then Centre for Bioinformatics) was the first institution in India to start an MPhil programme in Bioinformatics, in 2005. Again, in 2014, the Department became the first institution in India to offer MPhil Programme in Computer Aided Drug Design. MPhil is a research level program and can lead to a direct entry into PhD programme. The programme admits Postgraduate students from various disciplines through an entrance examination. The programme conforms to PhD/ MPhil regulations of UGC.
