Key characteristics of program:
This program involves one semester of full-time courses with matched practical sessions, and one semester of a supervised research project. This program gives the student a comprehensive foundation in algorithms, coding, and various bioinformatics topics, including Introduction to Biostatistics, Database theory, Next Generation Sequencing technologies, Genomics and Functional Genomics, Sequence analysis, Biological Databases and Ontologies, Evolution and Phylogenetics, Population genetics and GWAS, Structural bioinformatics, Proteomics, Networks and pathways, and Microbiomes. The program also includes group discussions of seminal and new bioinformatics publications, and the presentation of a seminar on the literature background of the research project. To allow articulation with a range of under-graduate programs, modules in cell biology and in scientific programming are also offered to address deficiencies in training backgrounds. |
Program Goals:
This BSc Hons program is designed to deliver students well-versed in the major bioinformatics and computation biology fields and analyses methods. The students will also be able to independently assess bioinformatics publications, and determine the scientific validity of studies. Graduates will be able to write OO computer code, including the use of appropriate algorithms, to produce quality bioinformatics analyses tools. Graduates from this BSc Hons program can proceed with an MSc, and, eventually, a PhD in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. |
