Bachelors Programme in Bioinformatics

University/Institute: Sapienza University of Rome, Italy
Location: Italy - Rome
Focus: Bioinformatics
Recommended Undergraduate Degrees: None
Degree Offered: BS/BSc/BA/B.Eng (< 1 year)BS/BSc/BA/B.Eng (Major/Primary Degree)

Key characteristics of program:

New technologies produce every day huge amounts of bio-molecular data such as genomic sequences, RNA and protein abundances, their interactions with one another and their subcellular localization. The challenge is to integrate such diversity of biological information sources for the global understanding of the physical and functonal interaction network of thousands of biomolecular players (DNA, RNA, proteins). This calls for a new &amp;quot;mind&amp;quot; with a true interdisciplinary attitude to meet the enormous need for trained professionals who are expert in biology, biomedicine, and computing, able to develop and apply sophisticated computational methods, encompassed by the field of bioinformatics.

Program Goals:

The Bachelor in Bioinformatics at Sapienza University will immerse you in the topics and applied methods of computational modeling, molecular biology, systems biology, structural biology, proteomics, genomic sequencing and genomic analysis, microarray and next generation sequencing analysis. As a graduate, you will be provided with the basic skills to interpret complex biological information, perform analysis of sequence data using sophisticated bioinformatics software, and program software when needed. The degree covers not only the theoretical aspects of the field, but also the practical side of bioinformatics.

Drawing upon the skills of biotechnology, computer science, statistics and engineering at Sapienza University, the program aims to create a truly interdisciplinary curriculum that brings together different disciplines. The bioinformatics degree is an inter-faculty and inter-departmental academic program for undergraduate students. It is supported by three faculties and by the participating departments.
