Forming part of the Old Town (Gamla Stan) Riddarholmen Island is home to many 17th century luxury hotels and one of the most beautiful and authentic medieval churches in Stockholm, the Riddarholmskyrkan.

Built in 1200 AD, the oldest part of the church was occupied by the Grey Friar monastery. The church later became a Franciscan monastery, and is now one of the best preserved Franciscan cathedrals in northern Europe. Since the 16th century, this church has been the burial place for Sweden's royalty.

The church is no longer used for religious purposes and is now only a royal memorial and open to the public for guided tours.
