Analyzing Genetic Data Using the R Programming Language

The workshop will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of the R programming language, such as data frames, matrices, vectors, variables, and graphs.  The workshop will show students how data frames can be used to store and analyze genetic data. The workshop will use the mToolbox pipeline to help students understand mitochondrial inheritance, mitochondrial haplotypes, heteroplasmic frequency, and de novo mutations from a computational standpoint. Students will make graphs and charts to grasp concepts regarding mitochondrial genetics. The students will also learn how to perform a PCA, or principal component analysis, using R. Students should download R,R studio, and all the files in the google folder ahead of time.

Prerequisites:

Download R: https://cloud.r-project.org/

Download R studio: https://rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/#download

Introduction to Computational Neuroscience

In this workshop, we will learn the anatomy and physiology of the brain as well as the basics of the nervous system, neurons, and neurodegenerative diseases. Then, we will explore the fields of computational neuroscience and artificial intelligence through real-world examples and a hands-on activity. This workshop will illustrate how these emerging techniques are being used to change the way we analyze and interpret information.
