Exploring Montréal from Home

It’s sad that we cannot be gathered together in Montreal to experience the city, our science, and see our friends and colleagues. To help ease the pain, Tourisme Montréal has compiled a list of some of the best online activities, including virtual city tours, music, games and more which feature the city. ISMB will be going back to Montreal in 2024 but until then, enjoy these activities.

DAY 3: Highlights & Recap

Day three of the conference kicked into high gear with Conference Co-chair, Shoshana Wodak awarding the ISCB Overton Award to the third keynote of the conference, Jian Peng, PhD, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His engaging presentation focused on Machine learning for structural and functional genomics resulting in a lively Q&A period.

The day then dove right back into the many sessions, tracks and channel options.

Lunch & Learn
The Black Women in Computational Biology Network held today's Lunch and Learn where conference attendees learned about its founding, mission and were able to participate in a lively discussion.

Two New NIH ODSS Awards
RFA-OD-20-013 - RADx-UP Coordination and Data Collection Center (CDCC) (U24 Clinical Trial Optional)

  • description as per the FOA: "NIH is issuing this FOA in response to the declared public health emergency issued by the Secretary, HHS, for 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This emergency cooperative agreement funding opportunity announcement (FOA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides an expedited funding mechanism as part of the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics-Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) initiative, a consortium of community-engaged research projects to understand factors that have led to disproportionate burden of the pandemic on the underserved and/or vulnerable populations so that interventions can be implemented to decrease these disparities. This FOA seeks to fund a single Coordination and Data Collection Center (CDCC) as an integral part of the consortium."
  • Letters of intent were due July 8 but as per Dr. Brennan some flexibility in NIH due dates will be acceptable due to COVID-19.
  • See also corrections in NOT-OD-20-140, including changes to total amounts awarded: "NIH intends to commit up to $80 Million over four years to fund one award."

The Artificial Intelligence for BiomedicaL Excellence (AIBLE) program - more details here.

  • This program will produce "Rubrics that allow evaluation of datasets (and plans to generate datasets) for ML-readiness, Tools to accelerate the creation of ML-ready data sets (intelligent annotators, metadata-filling instruments), Infrastructure to host, disseminate, and promote tools and datasets, and a group of ethically sourced, clean and available AI-ready datasets."
  • This is a broad initiative planned to last 7 years.

Green ISCB: ISCB Groves
ISCB, in partnership with All Things Small and Green and Trees for Life, has set up its first grove of native trees, the ISCB 2020 grove, to offset carbon emissions caused by ISCB activities such as those emitted during the conferences, workshop or panel meetings that it organizes. With this grove, ISCB members are also offered a simple and convenient way to offset their own carbon emissions such as those incurred during traveling to ISCB conferences or workshops. We welcome you to join us as we work towards healing our environment.

July 07, 2020 at 11:00AM EDT, Genetic Basis Of De Novo Appearance Of Carotenoid Ornamentation In Bare-Parts Of Canaries  by Malgorzata Gazda, hosted by EvolCompGen COSI and SMBE.

Unlike wild and domestic canaries (Serinus canaria), or any of the three dozen species of finches in genus Serinus, the domestic urucum breed of canaries exhibits bright red bills and legs. This novel trait offers a unique opportunity to understand the mechanisms of bare-part coloration in birds. To identify the mutation producing the colorful phenotype, we resequenced the genome of urucum canaries and performed a range of analyses to search for genotype-to-phenotype associations across the genome. We identified a nonsynonymous mutation in the gene BCO2 (beta-carotene oxygenase 2, also known as BCDO2), an enzyme involved in the cleavage and breakdown of full-length carotenoids into short apocarotenoids. Protein structural models and in vitro functional assays indicate that the urucum mutation abrogates the carotenoid-cleavage activity of BCO2. Consistent with the predicted loss of carotenoid-cleavage activity, urucum canaries tended to have increased levels of full-length carotenoid pigments in bill tissue and reduced levels of carotenoid-cleavage products (apocarotenoids) in retinal tissue compared with other breeds of canaries. We hypothesize that carotenoid-based bare-part coloration might be readily gained, modified, or lost through simple switches in the enzymatic activity or regulation of BCO2 and this gene may be an important mediator in the evolution of bare-part coloration among bird species.
