ISCB Supports National Institutes of Health Interim Research Products Policy Change

Open access to data, software and publications enables scientific progress and is a core and foundational principle of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). ISCB was delighted to learn of and fully supports The National Institution of Health’s policy, which allows investigators to cite their interim research products, such as preprints, and claim them as products of NIH funding.

Pre-print servers have emerged as a rapid and important means for molecular and computational biologists to make their data and discoveries widely available prior to publication in peer-reviewed journals. ISCB’s two affiliated journals, Bioinformatics and PLOS Computational Biology, have for years encouraged the submission of papers previously deposited in pre-print servers.

The availability of these data forms are the basis of our ability as computational biologists to mine and integrate data from several sources in order to make new discoveries. This principle forms the basis of our professional activity as Bioinformatians and Computational Biologists and underlies our Society’s mission to advance understanding of living systems through computation and to communicate scientific advances worldwide.

ISCB is pleased to learn that the National Institutes of Health also sees the great value of interim research products and therefore strongly supports the recent policy change.  ISCB will continue to encourage the deposition of papers in pre-print servers, in the same way that we support the deposition of software and data in the appropriate repositories prior to publication in peer-reviewed journals.

It is, however, still largely misunderstood how important this data is and ISCB will continue to work towards educating other funding agencies on this matter.

5th RECOMB Satellite Workshop on Computational Methods in Genetics
Los Angeles - United States
Jul 27, 2017 through Jul 28, 2017

Over the last decade, large-scale, cost-effective availability of genotype data has led to novel analytical opportunities and computational challenges in statistical genetics. Population genetics allows more refined understanding of the demographic history of our species. Association analysis provides insights into the functional and molecular underpinnings of diseases and traits. Clinical applications suggest genetics is emerging as a trailblazer in personalized medicine. Complex bioinformatics questions arise, ranging from inferring more nuanced statistical models of genetic information to algorithms that overcome the complexity challenges of analyzing millions of SNPs across millions of individuals, to systems level challenges of handling such Big Data repositories of genotypes and phenotypes.

6th RECOMB Satellite Workshop on Computational Cancer Biology
Los Angeles - United States
Jul 28, 2017 through Jul 29, 2017

Cancer research is undergoing a revolution driven by the application of high-throughput techniques such as genome sequencing, single-cell analysis, miRNA profiling, and mass spectrometry. Today’s high-throughput techniques are capable of performing in-depth characterization of tumor samples and producing large collections of data that have implications for both basic biology and clinical translation. Cancer is a disease of tremendous complexity; thus, the analysis and interpretation of this data with a systems biology approach demands sophisticated, specialized computational methods. This workshop brings together leading researchers in the mathematical, computational and biological sciences to discuss advances and open questions in cancer research.

Early Registration Deadline: 2017-03-01 through 2017-07-28

Submit Your Research Today to ISMB/ECCB 2017

ISMB/ECCB 2017 scientific program is shaping up nicely and you still have the opportunity to be a part of it.  This year’s meeting has incorporated the long-standing SIGs into the main conference structure.  The conference will be spread over four days, organized into 14 thematic areas.  The ISCB Communities of Special Interest (COSIs- formally known as SIGs) invite you to submit your work to be presented in these thematically organized tracks.

Those wishing to submit unpublished (late-breaking research talks) or published (highlight talks) work are invited to do so through the Abstract Submission portal.  Abstract submission is approximately the equivalent of the old “highlights/late breaking” submission categories. To submit your abstract (highlight or late-breaking talk) select the COSI that best fits your research area and submit through the provided submission link.

We also encourage and welcome submissions that fall outside of the 14 thematic areas.  To submit to the open call of abstracts (late-breaking research and highlight talks), select the other topics abstract submission portal. These submissions will be independently peer-reviewed from the COSI thematic submissions and selected for oral presentation.

Submission Deadlines
Abstract submissions deadline  April 13, 2017
which includes BioVis proceeding submissions deadline
CAMDA submissions deadline  May 19, 2017

*Some COSI abstract submission deadlines may vary.  Please see their specific abstract portal for additional information.*

We look forward to celebrating the 25 anniversary of ISMB with you in Prague, Czech Republic.
