Publication Options Information - Accepted full length papers will be considered for publication in either IEEE Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics or in GigaScience. Submission instructions: Initial full paper submissions to GLBIO 2015 should follow either IEEE Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (TCBB) or GigaScience guidelines. During the submission process, the authors will have the option to choose one of the two journals as a preferred mode for publication of their accepted paper. There is no guarantee that authors will be granted publication with their preferred publication mode. The final decision will be made by the GLBIO 2015 Proceedings Chairs and will depend on the number of accepted papers and their relevance to these corresponding journals.

Authors of accepted GLBIO 2015 papers who intend to submit toTCBB or GigaScience are expected to address the reviewers’ comments received during the GLBIO review process prior to journal submissionThen, such revised papers will be subject to additional peer review by the journal. For TCBB, the GLBIO 2015 Proceedings Chairs will act as guest editors for the journal and thus coordinate all aspects of the additional review. For GigaScience, it is the GigaScience editorial staff that will handle the additional reviews and make final publication decisions, typically in consultation with the GLBIO 2015 Proceedings Chairs.

Authors are responsible for any fees or expenses in regards to the journal publication of their paper. TCBB offers two models that authors can choose from: 1) no charge, allowing for paper access only to journal subscribers, or 2) $1,750 USD publication fee charge, allowing for open access. GigaScience offers the following: the best 20% of the papers will be charged no publication fee, and all other accepted papers will be given 15% publication fee discount (depending on the total number of accepted papers); GigaScience’s current publication fee is 1,250 GBP.

For authors interested in publishing their accepted GLBIO 2015 paper in TCBB, please see this page for details on submission guidelines: www.computer.org/portal/web/tcbb/author

For authors interested in publishing their accepted GLBIO 2015 paper in GigaScience, please see this page for details on submission guidelines:  www.gigasciencejournal.com/authors/instructions

Student Speed Networking Event
Tuesday, May 19, 7:30-9:30pm, Purdue Memorial Union Building, Anniversary Drawing Room.

Session information:  Have you ever wanted to talk to other students at a conference but weren't sure how to approach them? Would you like to be working with more collaborators but you don't know how to get started? Or maybe you just want to have more people to share ideas with after a talk?

The Great Lakes Student Council is hosting "scientific speed event" on Tuesday night for students to meet in a fun, informal setting. This event is similar to the regular speed dating, but with one twist: participants talk about their research interests, rather than personal interests. You'll be able to learn about other students and their research through random pairings and three minute "dates." When time's up, you'll move to the next "partner" in the line. At the end, the floor will open up for a relaxed mixer with free refreshments. Think you can summarize your work in 3 minutes? Let's find out!

..............................................................................................................................

Insulin's Hydrophilic center
Usually one thinks of a protein as having a central hydrophobic core. In the case of insulin (PDB ID 1ZNJ) the structure is a “trimer of dimers”. Each of the trimers has a hydrophobic core but the entire structure surrounds a center that contains a hydrophilic “cage” structure containing two zinc atoms (one of which is seen in the image as a green sphere).

The image was created using VRML facilities in UCSF Chimera. Each of the residues is represented by a sphere that is given a color corresponding to the residue’s position in the Kyte-Doolittle hydrophobicity - hydrophilicity range. The corresponding color range is a linear interpolation going from orange to white to blue. Spheres having centers that are within a distance of 9 Angstroms are joined using a spindle.

For this image, all the spheres corresponding to hydrophobic residues were removed along with any incident spindles. The result reveals a compelling symmetric structure that arises from the original 3-fold symmetry of the protein.
