ISMB 2024 was an incredibly successful and memorable event! With over 1,900 participants from various countries, both in-person and online attendance, it was a diverse and engaging experience. The impressive number of talks, panel discussions, and posters shows the depth and breadth of scientific content covered during the conference. The Exhibition Hall, where participants could interact with exhibitors, provided a great opportunity for networking, job exploration and exploring new ideas and technologies. ISMB 2024 wouldn't be possible without the dedication and hard work of volunteers, and it's heartening to see their efforts being acknowledged. Plan now to join us in 2025 in Liverpool, England, July 20-24. ISMB/ECCB 2025 is a highlight of the summer for the scientific community, and the upcoming conference in Liverpool holds promising prospects for further scientific advancement and collaboration.

Outstanding Contributions to the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) Award

The Outstanding Contributions to the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) Award was initiated in 2015 to recognize members who have made beneficial and lasting contributions to the Society through their leadership, service, and educational work, or a combination of these three areas.

Scott Markel is the 2024 recipient of the ISCB Outstanding Contributions Award to be presented at ISMB 2024.

Scott Markel, PhD,BIOVIA R&D Software Engineering Director, Biosciences & Scientific Informatics, Dassault Systèmes

Scott Markel, Ph.D., is an R&D Software Engineering Director in Dassault Systèmes’ BIOVIA Biosciences & Scientific Informatics group. In this role he is responsible for Discovery Studio and Pipeline Pilot’s scientific functionality. He is a former member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the International Society for Computational Biology. Scott is on the editorial board of PLOS Computational Biology, co-editing the popular Ten Simple Rules series. He co-authored Sequence Analysis in a Nutshell: A Guide to Common Tools and Databases and co-edited In Silico Technology in Drug Target Identification and Validation.

Ian Lawson Van Toch Memorial Award for Outstanding Student Paper

The Outstanding Student Paper Award is given to the student who presents the most thought-provoking or original paper at the Conference, as judged by our panel of experts.

This award is given in memory of Ian Lawson Van Toch, a 23 year old Medical Biophysics graduate student at the University of Toronto who passed away in August 2007. Ian was fortunate to have already discovered his passion for computational biology and how it can - and will - lead to quantum breakthroughs in cancer research. This passion was sparked when Dr Igor Jurisica hired Ian to work in his lab at the Ontario Cancer Institute as a researcher during the summer of 2006. That introduction blossomed into a mentoring relationship that is so vital to helping young students launch their careers.

Our thanks go to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation who has sponsored this award since 2008.

Past recipients of this special award include:

  • ISMB/ECCB 2023 - Cassandra Burdziak, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, United States

ISCB recognizes that many of our members have personal care responsibilities that can present a challenge to attending scientific conferences, and hence interfere with career advancement. We also recognize that you know best how to care for your own dependents and what their needs are.

Accordingly, ISCB offers Dependent Care grants in the amount of $600 USD to as many eligible candidates as allowed by available funding to be used towards expenses that will facilitate the member’s attendance at ISMB 2024.

Candidate eligibility

  • Be an ISCB member in good standing (active membership at the time of the application and during the conference).
  • Have a submission accepted for presentation at ISMB 2024 in which the candidate is the presenting author. Any presentation is eligible, but priority will be given to members presenting talks.
  • Be a primary caregiver (the one that cares more than 50% of the time) of a child or dependent adult at the time of the conference OR be an individual that requires caregiving assistance on a daily basis
    • Alternatively, the award can be used if the member needs caregiving assistance during the conference
  • Priority will be given to applicants who have a demonstrated need and/or are in early stages of their academic careers (e.g., graduate students, postdocs), as well as ISCB members working in non-high-income countries.

Eligible expenses include (but are not limited to) providing airfare for your child or for a caregiver to accompany you and attend functions with you if needed, costs for childcare at home while you are away (be it professionally provided or costs related to having a relative fly to provide care), or extra help paying for on-site care. Awardees can spend this money as they think best.

Applicants will be asked to provide:

  • Career stage (undergraduate student/graduate student/postdoctoral researcher/non-tenured faculty/tenured faculty/unemployed).
  • Age of dependents, if applicable.
  • Description of role as caregiver for a dependent adult, child, or relative; or needs for personal assistance.
  • A brief justification of the need for this award and how the award will be used (300 words max).

Payments will be sent promptly following the completion of the meeting after the awardee submits proof of attendance.

Submission deadline: May 31, 2024
Notifications will be sent by June 7, 2024
