It has been a long-standing tradition that the ISCB has covered the publishing fees for ISMB/ECCB Proceedings, but not for other meetings. It seems appropriate that we standardize the publishing offers across all ISCB conferences. By doing so we also align our strategy with that of many other conference organizers. We therefore are asking all authors of accepted Proceedings papers to cover the publication fee for their paper themselves if they are able to do so. For this purpose, we have negotiated a publication fee of $700 for ISMB-ECCB 2021. This is a very substantial reduction from the publication fees customary for OUP journals.
Complete your publication fee at https://iscb.swoogo.com/ISCBPublishingFees
Authors are responsible for the publication fee of $700 USD. ISCB will bill the author directly for these fees. ISCB is committed to supporting all of its members, especially those from under-developed nations and/or those without funding. If your manuscript is accepted and you are unable to pay for the publications fees in part or in full, you may submit a fee waiver request to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Please provide your name, full institute address, and a short (up to 50 words) justification of why you are unable to cover the publication fee with the subject line of ISMB/ECCB 2021 Publications Fee Waiver Request.
Proceedings publications are part of an online-only special issue of Bioinformatics and are open access (CC-BY), fully citable, and indexed by Medline and ISI. See the conference proceedings for ISMB 2020 for an example of online-only publication by Oxford University Press.

Presentation Title: Phylogenomics and Systems Biology approaches reveal conserved adaptive processes in Atacama Desert plants
Throughout evolution, plants become adapted to flourish in a variety of biomes and ecosystems, including some of the extreme deserts. In the current changing climate scenario, it is essential to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms that enable plant resilience to such extreme conditions. The Atacama Desert, the driest non-polar desert in the world, offers a unique opportunity to explore plant adaptations to marginal soils and extreme environmental conditions. In central Atacama Desert, we characterized the three pristine and extreme ecosystems that evolved along a natural altitudinal gradient of environmental parameters generated on the western Andes slopes. Among these environmental parameters, we recorded low and unpredictable precipitation patterns, large daily temperature oscillations, low humidity, extremely high radiation levels, as well as soils with consistently low nitrogen levels. Despite these harsh environmental conditions, an interesting diversity of plant species coexist in these ecosystems. We sequenced the transcriptome of the 32 most abundant and persistent plant species, representing 14 plant families with diverse phylogenetic origins, in order to explore signature gene functions underlying plant survival. Using phylogenomics, we compared the protein-coding sequences of these 32 Atacama species to their 32 closest available sequenced species, and found 265 genes under positive selection in Atacama plants versus their non adapted “sister” species. These genes are involved in various developmental, regulatory and metabolic processes associated with environmental adaptation. We chose a set of positive selected genes and based the available functional characterization of their Arabidopsis orthologs we exemplify their potential role in the adaptation of plants to the extreme Atacama Desert. Our study provides new insights into plant abiotic stress tolerance, and improves our understanding of the highly unique, undisturbed Atacama Desert ecosystem.
Dr. Gutiérrez is Full Professor and past Chair at the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, and current Research DIrector at the School of Biological Sciences of the P. Universidad Católica de Chile. Deputy Director of the Millennium Institute for Integrative Biology and Principal Investigator at the FONDAP Center for Genome Regulation. He has received several awards and honors during his career, including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Early Career Scientist award, John A. Boezi Memorial Alumnus Award from Michigan State University and the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is one of the founders of the Chilean Society of Plant Biologists and was the first elected president.
Dr. Gutiérrez’s interest is to use systems biology approaches to understand mechanisms to regulate gene expression in response to nitrogen nutrients or metabolite signals in plants using A. thaliana as a model system. He pioneered the combined use of classical experimental biology, functional genomics and bioinformatics approaches to unravel molecular mechanisms of plant form and function. He created tools that facilitate data integration and analysis and enable plant systems biology research. By iteratively combining bioinformatics tools with functional genomics and classical molecular genetics approaches he and his team discovered important molecular mechanisms plants utilize to respond to changes in nitrogen (N) nutrient availability using Arabidopsis as a model system. This is essential for developing strategies that intervene in molecular networks for biotechnological purposes such as improving N use efficiency in plants or modifying the amino acid content of seeds, which are important issues for health, agriculture and human nutrition. It is of paramount importance for modern agriculture to improve crop N use efficiency as world population, food needs and crop use diversification (e.g. for biofuel production) will continue to increase.

Presentation Title: Cosmos from chaos: how intra-genomic conflicts and horizontal transfer drive genome evolution
Horizontal gene transfer driven by self-mobilizable genetic elements allows the acquisition of complex adaptive traits and their transmission to subsequent generations. Transfer speeds up evolutionary processes as exemplified by the acquisition of virulence traits in emerging infectious agents and by antibiotic resistance in many human pathogens. Transfer is also costly because the vectors of horizontal transfer compete within genomes, have their own mobile elements and are often deadly. As a result, genomes are repositories of multiple immune systems from hosts and from mobile elements that interact in complex ways to drive gene flow in communities. The combination of evolutionary genomics and sequence analysis is now opening up these processes to show how they bring into the genome a constant flux of novel genes that favor the establishment and the invention of novel functions.
Eduardo Rocha studied Chemical Engineering and Applied Maths, did a PhD in Bioinformatics and a Habilitation in Biology. He is the director of the Genome & Genetics department at Pasteur Institute, where he heads the Microbial Evolutionary Genomics lab since 2008. He is a Specialist in comparative genomics, in particular in the use of bioinformatics and biostatistics to study microbial evolution. His research aims at understanding how and why genomes are organized, and how such organizational features evolve in respect to genome dynamics and bacterial adaptation. In the last decade, his work has focused on the role of mobile genetic elements in shaping gene repertoires and driving functional innovation.

This call is an open invitation to scientists and professionals working in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology to submit high quality proposals for Tutorials at ISMB/ECCB 2021.
The purpose of the Tutorials program is to build knowledge and provide hands-on training in "cutting-edge" topics relevant to the bioinformatics field and the COSI communities. Tutorials offer participants an opportunity to get an introduction to important established topics in bioinformatics, to learn about new areas of bioinformatics research, or to develop advanced skills in areas about which they are already knowledgeable. Tutorials may also serve to bring together people and COSI communities with common interests to discuss, debate and problem-solve defined topics.
Tutorials may include any form of presentation such as brief talks or hands-on exercises or panel discussions. Tutorials serve an educational function and are expected to provide a balanced perspective on a field of research. They should not focus on the presenters' own research or software, unless balanced with other tools in the same realm. However, tutorials on broadly used bioinformatics tools will be considered. Please note that if you wish to focus your talk on a demo of a specific software package, your proposal should be submitted to the Technology Track.
Potential topic areas (a list of Tutorials presented in 2020 is available here) may include but are not limited to the following:
Best practices (eg learning github, Python coding standard PEP8 etc)
Tutorials are planned to be in person, as noted above, or fully online, but should not be blended (with participants online and in person).
Tutorials should be designed as half-day (4 hours) or full-day (8 hours) sessions. Full day sessions would include a 1 hour lunch break from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. If in person lunch is not included as part of the registration fee.(15-minute coffee breaks are scheduled for 11:00 am and 4:00 pm and should also be listed in your agenda).
The conference organizers are able to offer a complimentary conference registration for up to 3 tutorial presenters. Tutorial organizers may choose to share the value of the complimentary registration if the tutorial has additional presenters.
Tutorial proposals should contain the following information in a maximum of 4 pages:
The final proposal must be uploaded as a PDF file only.
