In 2006, ISMB
will be held in Fortaleza, Brazil, marking the first time the meeting
has been held in South America. The meeting will also be the largest
bioinformatics conference ever held in Brazil.
In December,
then-President of the ISCB, Phil Bourne, and ISMB conference planner
Stephanie Hagstrom toured Fortaleza, a city of nearly two million
people on the Atlantic coast. Fortaleza is the capital of Ceará,
a state known for its beautiful beaches, culture, nightlife, as
well as being a center for academic research and business. Fortaleza
is a popular tourist destination, receiving an average 500,000 tourists
annually.
Hagstrom said,
"We're very excited about ISMB2006. Fortaleza is a beautiful
city, and the facilities there are first-rate. The state of Ceará
is interested in developing
bioinformatics in the region as well."
During their
inspection visit to Fortaleza
Bourne and Hagstrom met with the
Governor of Ceará, Lúcio Alcântara, and other
local officials. They also visited with ISCB Director Goran Neshich
of EMBRAPA, who was instrumental in putting together
the proposal for the conference.
The event will
be held at the Fortaleza Convention Center from August 6-11, 2006.
The modern facility is easily accessible from the airport include
auditoriums,
conference rooms, mini-auditoriums, an
acclimatized pavilion for expositions, parking area, and a food
court.
