Donate to the ISCB Travel Fellowship Campaign

During the registration process, you will have the opportunity to donate to the ISCB Travel Fellowship Campaign. You can make a difference in the future of computational biology and bioinformatics by supporting tomorrow’s researchers.

Student travel fellowships help propel young investigators toward important future discoveries. Join ISCB in giving students access to the principal role models within the field and help us influence the paths of scientific careers.

As federal funding opportunities continue to decline, ISCB reaches out to you to help this important initiative. Each year ISCB receives over 300 travel fellowship requests. With currently available funds, we can only support approximately 70% of these requests by providing partial funding to each recipient. Making a donation to the travel fellowship fund will enable us to support even more students with higher travel awards

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP MEETINGS (SIGs)

ISMB/ECCB 2015 will host several one- and two-day Special Interest Group meetings on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, prior to the main ISMB/ECCB conference.

Note: SIG Registrants are not required to register for the ISMB/ECCB 2015 conference to attend a SIG meeting. You may select "SIG only" to register only for a SIG.

Registering for a SIG allows you to move freely between all SIGs that take place at the same time as the meeting for which you are registered, to the extent that the room capacities can accommodate. SIG registration does not allow access to Satellite Meetings.

Registering for a SIG:

During online registration you must register for the primary SIG of your choice on a daily basis. If you register for the first day of a two-day SIG meeting the registration system will automatically select the second day. If you want to attend only one-day of a two-day SIG, or prefer an alternate SIG on the second day, simply deselect the second day and leave empty or select the second SIG choice rather than the default choice. If registering for a two-day SIG, the registration fee is equal to two (2) daily rates.

Each SIG participant will receive a booklet of schedules for all SIGs. SIG meeting's abstracts in PDF format will be available on individual SIG websites. Lunch is included in the SIG registration fee.

Please register for the SIG in which you are most interested so that we can assign SIGs to larger and smaller rooms as needed. All SIG meetings will be held at the Convention Centre Dublin.

NOTE: SIG registrants who have registered for only one day of SIG meetings are able to participate in SIG meetings only on the day for which they have registered.

↑ TOP

Q: What is the climate?
A: Dublin's  summers are typically warm and humid. It is best to bring a light water repellent or water proof jacket.

In summer (May to July), the averages for highest temperatures are between 18 and 20°C. The warmest months, July and August, get about 18 hours of daylight and it gets dark only after 11pm. Hence the well-worn phrase in Ireland; "sure there's a grand stretch in the evenings".

↑ TOP

Q: Where can I find medical or emergency information?
A: In all cases, except for emergencies, look in the phone book provided in your hotel or with the front desk. In case of an emergency requiring ambulance, fire or police dial 112 or 999.

In Ireland, 999 and 112 exist equally and run in parallel. Regardless of which number you call in Ireland, there will be no difference and the call will be handled in the same manner. The call is free of charge to the caller.

When should I call 112?

It is recommend that you dial 112 (or 999) in urgent, genuine cases of emergency where someone’s life, health, property or the environment is in danger, or if there is any reason to assume this to be the case. For non-emergency calls, consult your local directory service for the emergency service you require. Anyone with information regarding a crime can also ring the Garda Confidential telephone number on 1800 666 111.

Call for Art & Science Exhibition Proposals - ISMB/ECCB 2015

**Call for Arts and Science Submission Site* Opens February 16, 2015

Chair: Milana Frenkel-Morgenstern, Spanish National Cancer Research Center, Madrid, Spain

The Art & Science Exhibition is an event organized by the ISCB Student Council, a student-led section of ISCB whose mission is the development of the next generation of computational biologists.

The conference  will bring together scientists from a wide range of disciplines, including biology, medicine, computer science, mathematics and statistics. In these fields we are constantly dealing with information in visual form: from microscope images and photographs of gels to scatter plots, network graphs and phylogenetic trees, structural formulae and protein models to flow diagrams, visual aids for problem-solving are omnipresent. Some of the works of the annual exhibitions at the conference combines outstanding beauty and aesthetics with deep insight that perfectly proves the validity of our approach or goes beyond the problem's solution. Others were surprising and inspiring through the transition from science to art, opening our eyes and minds to reflect on the work that we are undertaking.

For the Art & Science Exhibition the organizers invite all interested conference attendees (hereafter referred to as "artists") to submit images that have been generated as part of a research project. They are also soliciting images from creative efforts that involve scientific concepts or employ scientific tools and methods.

Participate in this exciting event to surprise and inspire us, to open our eyes and minds.

Exhibition

The Art & Science Exhibition will take place for the duration of conference. Artists are asked to submit physical images for this exhibition. Images will be shown in physical form and some may be chosen for projection as part of a slide show during the conference plenary sessions.

Contest

Images will automatically be entered in a contest for a $200 (USD) award unless the artist indicates during the submission process that the work should be excluded from the contest.

Conference delegates will select the winner of the contest through majority vote based on their personal preference. Each delegate will have one vote.

Submission Guidelines

An artist can be an individual or a group of individuals. A maximum of 2 submissions from presenting artist will be accepted and must be in a physical form. Space for physical presentation of images is limited and will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. *Please note only submissions that do not require Audio Visual support will be accepted.

Content

The artwork may deal with any theme in science but the organizers are particularly interested in work that is reflecting on topics related to Computational and Molecular Biology. While artistic freedom is a primary concern of the organizers the nature of the event requires certain restrictions on the content of the artwork. Artwork that contains sexual, political or religious themes cannot be accepted into the exhibition and will be rejected. Works created for commercial purposes will also be rejected.

Materials

The final artwork has to be submitted for review before the deadline through the online submission system. Together with the artwork a brief description of the work has to be submitted as well as a title for the work. The description must not be longer than 150 words.

Images to be presented in physical form must be smaller than 43 x 43 (109.2 cm x 109.2 cm). They must not be deeper than 0.5 (1.2 cm) and must be attachable to a poster board using push pins or velcro. The organizers recommend to leave a sufficiently wide border around the artwork and to carefully consider the size of photos and the amount of detail included in images. All images must be submitted in their final form and resolution. In case of images employing non-digital media a high-resolution digital photo of the artwork has to be submitted. Images can be submitted in PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF or PDF format. The file size must not exceed 25 MB. Accepted works must be provided by the artist for inclusion of the show. (The conference organizers will not print the art works)

Online submission system

Review

All submitted artwork will be reviewed for compliance with content restrictions as well as technical requirements. Artwork out of compliance will be rejected. Furthermore, the organizers reserve the right to reject artwork for any reasons.

Copyrights and Permissions

The artist must be holding the copyrights for all parts of the artwork or have permission from the copyright holders to use their works. Copyright holders other than the artist must be attributed accordingly in the abstract accompanying the artwork.

By submitting artwork to the Art and Science Exhibition the artist gives permission to the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) to display this work and reproductions thereof during the conference and in materials associated with this and future ISCB events, such as program booklets, (electronic) newsletters, promotional brochures and websites.
