Abstract Submission Process
  1. • COSIs identify 2 or 3 Abstract Chairs (AC) from within community to manage the review process. These names will be added to EasyChair as Track Chairs for each COSI.

    • ACs will be responsible for identifying a review / program committee to review the abstracts for both talk and poster presentation within their COSI. ACs will add these names to COSI track within EasyChair.

    • Each COSI is responsible for reviewing abstracts which are submitted as:
     a) Talk only
     b) Poster only
     c) Talk and poster (abstracts in this category if not accepted as a talk should be reviewed for a poster).

    • Ideally each abstract should have a minimum of two (2) reviews and ideally three (3).

    • If COSI feels submission better suited for different COSI than AC should email that AC to facilitate transfer of submission.

    • COSI AC responsible for notifying *acceptances for talks and posters within COSI track. (*Poster acceptance notifications should highlight ISCB will contact accepted posters presenters to confirm poster presentation schedule, participation,  registration).

    • Selected Abstract talks will be presented by COSI track and run in parallel at the conference.

    • The length of a talks are in units of 20 minutes (should includes time for questions). Oral presentation times for abstracts are announced by the COSI track organizers.

    • ACs responsible for reviewing Late Posters to their COSI (opens April 6, closes, April 26) within individual COSIs. *Acceptance notifications sent May 18.

General FAQ

Q: Can COSIs invite submitters of non-accepted proceedings talks to present in our COSI Track?
A: Yes, you are welcome to invite these submitters to present an oral abstract as part of your COSI track by writing directly using the contact information provided during the submission process.

Q: Can an author present more than one oral presentation at the conference?
A: In order to provide the opportunity for as many attendees as possible to participate in the conference, only one oral talk per presenter will be accepted. In exceptional cases, speakers may be invited to present a second talk if the topics are considered sufficiently distinct. This decision will be left to the COSI committees, but we would strongly encourage you to consider inviting another group member, or selecting an equally good alternative talk. Overall, the meeting benefits from its diversity and breadth, and the organizing committee encourages the COSIs to continue work together to ensure that this is maintained.

Presentation Title: 25 years of human gene finding: are we there yet?
Time: Friday July 6, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Room: Grand Ballroom C-F

Abstract

How many genes do we have? The Human Genome Project was launched with the promise of revealing all of our genes, the “code” that would help explain our biology. The publication of the human genome in 2001 provided only a very rough answer to this question. For more than a decade following, the number of protein-coding genes steadily shrank, but the introduction of RNA sequencing revealed a vast new world of splice variants and RNA genes. In this talk, I will review where we’ve been and where we are today, and I will describe a new effort to use an unprecedentedly large RNA sequencing resource to create a comprehensive new human gene catalog.

This talk describes joint work with Mihaela Pertea, Alaina Shumate, Ales Varabyou, and Geo Pertea.

Biography

Steven Salzberg is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Biostatistics at Johns Hopkins University, where he is also the Director of the Center for Computational Biology and a member of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine. His group’s research focuses on the development of new computational methods for analysis of DNA from the latest sequencing technologies. Over the years they have developed and applied software to many problems in gene finding, genome assembly, comparative genomics, evolutionary genomics, and sequencing technology itself.

The Salzberg Lab's current work emphasizes analysis of DNA and RNA sequenced with next-generation technology. Dr. Salzberg's blogs and other writing cover topics on the impact of science on society including the effects of pseudoscience, the problems of alternative medicine, the anti-vaccination movement, gene patents, and the influence of sports on higher education. See the links elsewhere on his site for other scientific publications, opinion pieces, and other news.

Application Process

Application is by invitation-only, sent automatically via email to the submitting author of an accepted Proceedings, Abstracts (previously late-breaking and highlights), and Posters (excluding accepted Late Posters) submissions. This invitation email will arrive after notification of acceptance of one of these submission types as a separate. IF YOU HAVE AN ACCEPTED PRESENTATION AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED AN INVITATION BY MAY 1 – PLEASE CHECK YOUR SPAM FOLDER AND THEN CONTACT US IF AN INVITATION IS NOT THERE: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Each invitation will include a unique travel fellowship application URL to link to an application. The application URL must be submitted by the presenting author only, if he or she meets the qualifying requirements. If the submitting author is not the presenting author, it is the responsibility of the submitting author to forward the invitation to the presenting author if he or she meets the eligibility requirements. Each application URL can only be used one time and no application will be accepted after the deadline of May 11, 2018.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Applicant must be a current ISCB member whose membership does not expire prior to the last day of the conference (July 10, 2018). Applications will not be accepted from non-members; pending memberships do not qualify and must be paid in full prior to submission of an application.

2. Applicant must be listed as an author or co-author on the original submission of an accepted ISMB 2018 Proceedings paper, Abstracts (previously Highlight paper and Late Breaking Research abstract), or Poster (excluding accepted Late Posters), and, per the requirements of the funding agencies, the funded applicant must be the presenting author of the work. (Submitters to the "Call for Late Posters" are not eligible for fellowship funding.)

3. Applicant must be registered in a degree program (undergraduate or graduate) or as a *postdoctoral research fellow at an accredited educational institution at the time of the conference; post docs and employees of any US federal agency are ineligible for funding using US federal funds - currently we have only US federal funds for this travel fellowship program. (*The period of eligibility for a PostDoc is five (5) years from the time of their PhD completion date).

4. Applicant must be prepared to register for ISMB 2018 by the early registration deadline of June 7, 2018, and plan to attend all four conference days. If attendance at the conference is dependent on receipt of travel fellowship funds, please do not register until after the notification of travel fellowship funding. Any funded applicant failing to register for the conference by the early registration deadline of June 7, 2018 will automatically forfeit the funds so that another applicant can be awarded from among the original pool of applicants.

5. Applicant must be able to pay all expenses of attending the conference up front, including conference registration fee (as noted in #4 above), travel, accommodations and meals. Travel Fellowship funding will be provided as a reimbursement as a check payable in USD and mailed to the participant approximately 6-8 weeks after the conference.

Eligible expenses

Eligible expenses toward travel fellowship funds include conference registration, transportation (air or land transportation from home region to conference city), a maximum of $660 USD of hotel room and occupancy tax charges, and a maximum of $165 USD in meal expenses. The hotel must be booked within the conference hotel book to be eligible for reimbursement. In order to receive the full-awarded amount, receipts for registration, transportation and hotel accommodations are required that equal or exceed the awarded amount. Conference registration fee is reimbursable at the early registration pricing only; registration fees to attend pre-conference tutorials are not reimbursable expenses, but the registration fee for the Student Council Symposium is an accepted expense (only when also registering for the full conference).

Notification

Applicants will be notified no later than June 1, 2018 of the funding status. In some cases applicants may be notified they are on a wait list for funding, which means that ISCB is fully expecting but still awaiting the formal confirmation of our grant award from one or more granting agency, and that awarding of those funds will not be possible until the grant needed to fund the travel fellowship is confirmed. Any wait listed applicant that is eventually awarded funds will be offered the opportunity to register at the early registration rate, therefore, please do not register for the conference if your attendance is fully dependent on being awarded a travel fellowship as any cancellation of an applicant's registration will be subject to the full regular registration cancellation policy.

Funded applicants will be required to present evidence of their eligibility status (such as student identification card) at the conference registration desk to receive their funds, and must sign in with the Travel Fellowships Desk to record their attendance. In all cases, funds will be mailed to funded applicants after the conference per the details noted in Eligibility Requirements #5 above. This email address is being protected from spambots.
